As we reported last week, the Oswego School District Board has hired Paul O'Malley of Skokie as the district's new assistant superintendent for business services. The 39 year-old O'Malley has an impressive resume and seems well qualified to become the district's top administrator on money matters. We wish him well.
However, we were surprised at how much more the board agreed to pay O'Malley than his predecessor, Tim Neubauer, who will leave the district June 30 after three years of service. O'Malley's salary and TRS (Teacher Retirement System) benefits package will cost the district $198,675. Neubauer's salary and TRS benefits package totaled $156,320, a difference of $42,355.
Given the stated desire of the board to be as transparent and fiscally responsible to school district taxpayers as possible, we're surprised they awarded such a generous contract to O'Malley.
We also wonder about the impact O'Malley's contract will have on other contracts the board is expected to approve in the coming months as it hires two other top assistant superintendents. Certainly the bar on administrator salaries for the district has been raised. Fortunately, the board has previously set the salary for the next school superintendent at $235,000.
