The Oswego East boys' tennis team earned a historic Southwest Prairie Conference win, defeating crosstown rival Oswego for the first time in school history.

The Wolves hosted the Panthers last Thursday and earned a 4-3 win on the courts to improve to 1-1 in SPC play. The Panthers are also 1-1 in league action. The teams will meet again in the SPC Meet May 11-12.

"It's going to be a battle, that's for sure," Oswego East head coach Scott Gengler said. "We just have to keep playing the way we're playing right now. We beat Plainfield South 5-2 (Tuesday) and we have Minooka on Thursday, so we're into the heart of our conference right now. We have to keep improving and keep getting ourselves better to position ourselves to win conference."

At first singles, Oswego East junior Blaine Hrovat defeated Oswego senior Austin McWethy 6-3, 6-3, while the Panthers won the remaining singles matches. Oswego sophomore Jason Koesler defeated Oswego East senior Andrew Barron 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Oswego junior David Mateyka defeated Oswego East senior Christian Hernandez 6-3, 6-4 at third singles.

Oswego East won three of the four doubles courts as Oswego East junior Austin Hwang and senior Daniel Milenkovic won 6-7 (7-1), 6-1, 7-5 at first doubles over Oswego senior Dan Nagel and junior Andrew Laning. Hwang and Milenkovic are currently undefeated in SPC play.

Oswego junior Dom Pizzo and sophomore Hudson Cross defeated Oswego East juniors Rashad Kulam and Abhipsit Srivastava 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 at second doubles.

At No. 3 doubles, Oswego East senior Ali Adnan and junior Matt Denor won 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 over Oswego juniors Brendan Egdorf and Anthony Hart-Davi while Oswego East juniors Osama Kamal and Aaron Baltazar won 6-3, 6-3 over Oswego freshmen Nikish Patel and Nick Latzo, who was a last-minute addition to the varsity lineup when junior Jonah Engel became ill.

Oswego junior Ken Papke, a No. 2 doubles player, is also still out of the lineup with an elbow injury.

"They have big numbers and a much improved team," Oswego head coach Linda Keely said. "We had a kid who was sick right before the meet so I pulled up one of the (JV) kids. I think at the conference tournament we will be OK if I have both players back. Oswego East has a lot of depth ... but we are getting better every time we step on the courts."

Oswego East improved to 3-4 overall with a 6-1 win over West Aurora on Monday. Hrovat and Hernandez won in straight sets at first and third singles, respectively. Kulam and Srivastava won in straight sets in doubles play as did Adnan and Denor and Kamal and senior James Albright. Milenkovic and Hwang won in three sets at first doubles.

Oswego East defeated Plainfield South 5-2 on Tuesday, but complete results were unavailable at press time. The Wolves host Minooka today, Thursday, at 4 p.m. before entering the Lincoln-Way Central Quad on Saturday at 9 a.m. Oswego East will also enter players into the Hoffman Estates Hawk Invite on Saturday before resuming SPC play next Tuesday at Plainfield East.

"We start out at the beginning of the year with a tough non-conference schedule with Yorkville, Marmion and Batavia and that really gets us ready for conference play," Gengler said. "Going to these invites, we have Lincoln-Way Central this weekend and some guys going to Hoffman Estates, and next weekend we go to Prairie Ridge. That'll give the guys great experience going into conference and sectionals. It's a nice warm-up."

For Oswego, the Panthers won a 5-2 match over Plainfield North on April 10 behind a singles sweep from McWethy and Koesler in straight sets and a 6-1, 6-3 win by Mateyka at third singles.

Plainfield North won the first two doubles courts, but Egdorf and Hart-Davi won 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 at third doubles and Engel and Patel won 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) at fourth doubles.

Last Saturday, Oswego entered the Geneva Invite with only four players participating due to ACT testing for high school juniors.

"I was really proud of my doubles players," Keely said. "Our team finished fifth overall and that was forfeiting both No. 1 and No. 2 singles."

Crystal Lake Central won the championship while Marmion finished second.

McWethy and Koesler defeated DeKalb 6-0, 6-0 and won 6-1, 6-4 over IMSA before falling to Marmion 6-1, 6-1 in the championship.

Nagel and Cross defeated IMSA 4-6, 6-1, 10-2 to advance in the bracket where they lost 6-4, 6-4 to Marmion in the semifinals. Oswego lost to St. Charles East 6-1, 6-4 to finish fourth overall.

"Austin and Jason lost to a great Marmion team in the finals. Marmion just did not make mistakes," Keely said. "In the semis, Hudson and Dan lost to Marmion and played some great tennis."

Oswego's non-conference meet at Batavia was postponed on Monday due to weather and was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, but results were unavailable at press time. The Panthers will visit Plainfield East today, Thursday, at 4 p.m. before hosting the Oswego Quad on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Due to the condition of Oswego's home courts, the quad will take place at Oswego East.

Oswego will begin another busy stretch next Monday at West Aurora before resuming SPC play at home against Minooka next Tuesday. Oswego's Panther Invite on April 28 will also take place at Oswego East.
