A total of four of the district's top administrators will be emptying out their desks and moving on to other endeavors by June 30. As we have reported previously, Superintendent Dr. Dan O'Donnell and assistant superintendents Todd Colvin and Tim Neubauer have all tendered their resignations, while another assistant superintendent, Dr. Marsha Hollis, will retire.
The pending departure of the superintendent along with the three administrators is an unprecedented event for the district and the school board. It is clearly apparent the district's current administrative team found itself out of sync with the school board that was elected in April of last year.
Under the Illinois School Code, it is the responsibility of the school board to hire a superintendent who then, in turn, assembles his administrative team to manage the district's day-to-day operations and carry out policies as set by the board.
We will remind the board their own policy grants the superintendent they hire the authority to evaluate administrators and "the superintendent shall make employment and salary recommendations to the school board."
In the short-term it may be necessary to bring-in an interim superintendent and administrators to manage the district's operations. Long-term, the board will need to hire a permanent superintendent and allow that person to pick his or her "own team" by hiring the replacement administrators.
The board should also not fill any of the administrative vacancies with spouses, family members or friends who may have the necessary qualifications. The last thing the school district needs at this difficult time is a nepotism controversy.
