Up to 25 additional teachers may be hired by the Oswego School District for the 2012-13 school year.
Todd Colvin, assistant superintendent for administration, told school board members Monday they may need up to 25 additional full-time-equivalent teachers to handle the expected new students and to teach classes at Murphy Junior High which will open next fall in the Plainfield portion of the district.
He said there will be an emphasis on establishing Murphy's core staff and filling hard to find areas, such as Special Education, ELL/DL and high school needs, including higher level math and science positions.
Murphy which had not been used as a junior high since being completed in 2008 will be opened for the first time for the 2012-13 classes.
"Staffing season is upon us and this is a very busy time of year so I just wanted to give you a heads up on what we are planning," he said.
He noted that he believes 25 more teachers to be a fair starting number based on school attendance boundary changes, the opening of Murphy Junior High and projections that show district will gain another 400 to 600 new students.
He said the deadline for any certified staff to transfer from one school to another was Friday, March 9. But he had planned to meet with each principal last week to review whether they would be affected by any boundary changes.
This would include looking at all the volunteer transfers that had been requested. If they don't get the number of teachers they need for each school the administration may make some involuntary transfers, something the teachers association is aware of and is working on with the administration, he said.
He noted that there also is a domino effect when a teacher who transfers to another school must be replaced at his or her former school.
"It's quite complex when you open a new building and change boundaries at the same time, he said.
Phase B will be to look at their needs after these teachers are hired and transfers are completed to see if additional teachers and non-certified staff will be needed. And any additional student enrollments could affect their needs, he said.
"This does not mean that I will post 25 jobs immediately. I will ask at the next board meeting for the okay to hire up to 25 teachers as needed," he said.
Colvin said he will be working with Brent Anderson, the new principal for Murphy, to meet his needs for teachers.
He said they will need to move quickly to get excellent candidates for these positions.
Because the next scheduled board meeting will not be held until April, board members said they may schedule a special meeting to discuss this and other issues. No date was set at that time.
