The Oswego/Oswego East boys' swim team qualified for seven of the 12 events going in to the state meet last weekend.
Of those five events, only one - junior Pierce Parlier in the 100-yard backstroke - qualified past the first day, Friday (with a time of 52.24), and ended up placing seventh overall with a time of 52.06 seconds.
Parlier, now a three-time state qualifier, also qualified in the 200-yard IM for the first time, but did not get past Friday with his time of 1:55.47.
"He did a great job," Oswego head coach Deryl Leubner said about Parlier, who qualified at the Metea Valley Sectional in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.80. "He dropped time in both his swims. The meet was really fast this year. The time Pierce scored in the IM scores just about every other year but this year. But seventh in the backstroke is outstanding. That's what he's been working for all year."
Parlier's finish earned Oswego seven points and a 30th-place finish (tied with Addison Trail) at the meet, which was held at Evanston Township.
New Trier ran away with the championship title after scoring 250 points. Naperville North was next with 130, followed by Warren (80) and Hinsdale Central and Sandburg tied for fourth with 73.
"New Trier was unreal," Leubner said. "I don't think I've ever seen a team score that many points. They had two kids coming back in every event. On top of that, the times they swam - they had two national records broken - and there's only 12 events. It was very, very fast."
Oswego's 200-yard medley relay team, which consisted of Parlier, junior Bucky and senior Dylan Coonradt and junior Andrew Carlson, was disqualified because of a false start. They entered the meet with a time of 1:37.41.
"I thought we'd get the relay to score, but obviously, we didn't," Leubner said. "We wanted to get top 12, and 13th is as good as 25th. They were doing everything they could. I don't fault them. We were fine with that."
Carlson also competed in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle. Bucky Coonradt also did not qualify for the next day in the 100-yard breaststroke or the 100-yard butterfly.
"They got the experience - that's what we said our goal was this year - to get there," Leubner said.
"It's a very unique meet, and the first time there, it typically doesn't go very well. You have to qualify without shaving. That's the key. So next year, the guys know they have to get out of the sectional without shaving."
Oswego graduates just three seniors - Dylan Coonradt, diver Jaime Williams and Brian Bernier - which means the future is bright for the squad next year.
