For the sixth time in the eight years Oswego and Oswego East have been a co-op boys swimming and diving team, the squad won the Independent Conference title. The team did it Saturday at Riverside-Brookfield, capping a perfect conference season and securing the ninth league title in 11 seasons of program history.
Oswego finished first with a total of 317 points. DeKalb was next with a 277. Riverside-Brookfield finished third, followed by Plainfield's co-op, Morris and Fenton.
"The meet was very fast," said Oswego/East head coach Deryl Leubner, whose team won the title last season as well. "Everybody swam very fast. We started out great with (senior) Jaime (Williams) getting first in diving and (freshman) Cody (Padlo) getting second, so we had 29 points after the first event and before the swimmers even showed up. That alone right there gave us a cushion we felt confident with. Without our strong performance in diving, the meet would have been really close all the way through.
"It was a very competitive meet. It was good to see the conference was back to having a third team (in Riverside-Brookfield) swim really strong."
Oswego's top swim performance was from the 200 medley relay team (junior Pierce Parlier, junior Bucky Coonradt, senior Dylan Coonradt and junior Andrew Carlson), who broke Riverside-Brookfield's almost 60-year-old pool record with a time of 1:40.78.
"No other records were set at the meet, but Bucky, Andrew, Pierce and the (200) medley relay team are right at the state cuts," Leubner said. "To be right there before we start resting (before the sectional meet) is great."
Carlson had two first-place finishes in both the 200 free and 100 free. Parlier went first as well in the 100 yard backstroke and Bucky Coonradt did it in the 100 yard breaststroke.
Second-place finishes belonged to Parlier in the 200 yard IM, Dylan Coonradt in the 500 free, Bucky Coonradt in the 100 yard fly, junior Zak Thoreson in the 500 free and the 200 free relay team.
Third-place finishes went to Thoreson in the 200 free, freshman Quinn Parlier in the 100 backstroke, the 400 free relay team and Dylan Coonradt in the 100 yard free.
Senior Brian Bernier placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke, Quinn Parlier went fifth in the 100 yard fly and junior Sam Timken was eighth in the 50 free.
Next up for Oswego is the Metea Valley Sectional. That meet, which features some of the best teams around, including Naperville North, Neuqua Valley, Naperville Central and Metea Valley, takes place Sat., Feb. 18.
